About

Babareef was/is a Boston based band founded around 2002 consisting of:

Anthony Crema – Guitar

Matt Crema – Piano

Josh Hoekwater – Sax, Vocals, Percussion

Gina Rebelo – Bass, Vocals

Ryan Patterson – Lead vocals, guitar, guy who got stuck mixing the album

Josh Saloio – Drum Face

Nobody was ever able to properly describe the “Babareef sound”.  One critic managed to come the closest to capturing the Babareef essence by stating “huh?”.  Our greatest claim to fame was being embedded and sold on a failed MP3 player that clipped to a hat visor called The Perfect Curve.  We got one write-up in a magazine:

“BABA REEF – BabaReef
Funky basslines and lighthearted harmonies capture the essence of Baba Reef.  The guitar is solid but not wanky, pulling back to leave the songs room to develop.  As a result the album really is able to take a life of its own on. There are some mean drums and some nice horn lines that keep your booty shaking, your feet tapping and your mouth smiling.  It’s an album that only goes as deep as you want it to. On the whole it’s a lot of fun and by the performance I have seen, that’s what this band is all about.  This disc, although it only captures a fraction of what they are capable of, will get you dancing.  So with that said, be real careful where you play it. Work didn’t take to kindly to me getting all down and funky on my desk during office hours. “

Anthony (Brooklyn NY), Ryan (Reading MA), and Gina (Los Gatos, CA, now in Jersey City) met at Northeastern University.  Anthony, Matt (brothers) and Gina were already playing in a band called Conductor’s Groove.  After much searching, we added the two Joshes.  Josh Saloio on drums (from Rhode Island), and Josh Hoekwater on sax (Cambridge, MA, originally from Michigan).

We recorded one “studio” album in the early 2000’s, it’s available on spotify, itunes etc. or available at your local yard sale at the “Free” table

We mostly played around Boston (Harper’s Ferry, Bill’s Bar, Paradise, Common Ground, Skybar, Great Scott), but also “toured” New England, playing shows in Vermont, NY, Maine, and New Hampshire.
